I would be interested to hear from other companies what the hiring practice is for candidates with felony convictions that show up during pre-employment background checks. What "hire-no hire" criteria is used to make the final decision.

My companies policy is flat out....if you have ever been convicted of a felony (no matter how long ago and no matter the type of felony) you are not eligible for employment.

Laws regarding this issue vary by state, thus a review of relevant state law is imperative. However, under federal law, the use of such criteria would typically have a disparate impact on the basis of certain protected subgroups, hence the basis of rejecting a candidate must be job related and consistent with business necessity.
