Here's my question: What is a given "fair" calculation for trying to determine the needed size of your IT staff based on the overall size of your company? I've scoured Google to death and can't seem to find any real "current" information on this subject so I was hoping to get some real life responses from this forum.

The company I work for has 3 Infrastructure side support staff (a Director, a Systems Admin, and a PC Tech) for 22 site locations stretched over 4 counties, around 700 total employees, roughly 50 servers, 400 desktops, and about 250 laptops. Are these individuals strectched beyond what is common-place in the industry or are they on par as compared to other companies around the same size?

Additionally, we have only one person working in our Telecom department. He provides all service and support for all Telecom related issues (desktop phones, cell phones, pagers, fax machines, PRI's, adds/moves/changes, etc...). What is common on the Telecom side for this size of a company?

Any help or insight as compared to what others are doing would be extremely beneficial. Thanks in advance for all who take the time to respond to this thread.

I think you might be better off asking this question of someone in a similar IT department head role rather than HR folks. You haven't really given us enough to work with here in terms of systems that these folks are working with and what IT initiatives are being undertaken. Those are key determining factors in the size of your IT department.

Based on the sketchy info and my own personal experience, I would guess that one PC tech serving 700 employees would be a bit thin. Before you go and hire more staff, though, you might want to investigate outsourcing your PC tech and telecom tech functions to a company that might have better coverage than what you can provide.
