I am interested in learning the effectiveness of pre-employment (post offer) medical exams in fostering a safe work environment and minimizing job related injuries. Our firm is in the manufacturing industry in CA. Employees are expected to lift up to 85 lbs. on a regular basis. We are considering using X-rays, medical questionnaires, and physical exams to assist us in hiring decisions. I am not so much interested in legal advice, but I am interested in knowing what other companies are doing to prevent back injuries and any hard evidence to show the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of pre-employment medical exams.
Insights into the usefulness of pre-employment back X-rays to show that subsequent on the job back injuries should be apportioned under CA's workers' comp. laws to pre-employment medical conditions, will be especially appreciated.
Thank you.

I work for a hospital that requires physical testing for CNAs (in addition to the usual medical history questions) that is very effective. The test is about 45 minutes long where they are required to push and pull amounts of weight similar to what the job requires and it serves as a test as well as an opportunity for the nurse giving the test to instruct the person on proper ways to lift to minimize injury. The Nurse gives instructions on how to lift and if the person cannot follow the instructions and lift correctly then they do not pass. All of the testers are certified by an outside company to give the tests. It is very helpful for screening out applicants that are not physically capable of doing the job, or who are more likely to get injured for incorrect lifting practices.
