I agree with OLDHR on obtaining a strong background in business if you desire to become a high-level HR executive someday. On the other hand, it's important to note that if you want to get into a HR job fresh out of college, you're chances of getting one will be much better if armed with a HR degree. What you learn in school can be applied directly and immediately to a variety of HR functions with minimal training.

Nonetheless, acquiring business knowledge (finance/accounting, economics, statistics, marketing, etc...) throughout your HR career will be imperative to achieve great success as a HR professional in the 21st century globalized marketplace.

HR is a great career, good luck!

If I had done an internship, I may have had a better shot at getting into HR right away. My degrees are in business (emphasis on HR) and technical writing. I started out in a temporary position as a HR Admin Assistant and worked my way from there. While I'm still loving HR, I realize that there are parts of it that I don't want to do for the rest of my life, so am glad I have other education/skills to fall back on.
