I am in a newly created recruiting role for an in-store retail service provider. I am looking for ideas for strengthening our recruiting network. What recruiting techniques, sources, etc... have you found useful in recruiting this category of employee? What has not worked? Any and all advise is most welcome and appreciated!

I would say number one ask your top employees for referrals. They tend to be your best spokespeople. Also, if you are flexible in terms of hours network with some local community centers or schools. You may be able to get a pipeline of individuals that are in a transition period, going to school, retired etc. If you build upon your reputation as a good employer to work for and are involved in the community you will be surprised at how many people are calling you regarding opportunities to work at your company.

Hope this helps!

I would highly recommend offering first day medical benefits to part-time hourly workers. Studies have shown that offering benefits to this population results in attracting a more stable employee and results in higher retention rates. These benefits are lower then the major medical plans typically offered to full time employess. They are voluntary and all employee pay. For more information contact me at 813-891-1800.

I have had a tremendous amount of success with a career site named Careerbuilder.com.

I was hesitant at first, considering I was looking for part-time/hourly employees. I was floored by the response to my posting. I've actually rolled our Careerbuilder as my main source for all my recruiting.

I think you are over looking one of the best sources of canidates and that is your customer base. If you are a great place to shop then the tie in is a great place to work. In the Pizza business they often stick not only coupons on the box but fliers about job opportunities. Just remember Now Hiring Signs are not a great draw. If now hiring signs worked we shoulde be going with Customers Wanted. If you would like a list of the 5 best places to find hourly assoicates let me know at mel@melkleiman.com and I will send you the list.

Your "testimonial" about CareerBuilder would mean a whole more if you weren't a CB employee as indicated by your email address. I doubt CB will appreciate this kind of marketing.

We recruit for customer service reps regularly and we have started using an open call process where we block off a couple of hours a day for two days a week to interview anyone who walks through the door. We do this twice a month. With lower level position the candidates often no show because they get something else and don't bother calling. This saves time in screening resumes, conducting phone screen and setting interviews only to have a candidate no show. If you get a bad candidate in open call you jusst cut the interview short and only only spend 5 minutes with them.

We have determined that the number 1 way to recruit for this level employee is through referrals. Develop a proactive employee referral program that motivates people to participate.

I agree that employee referrals are the way to go. Also consider "shopping" other local retailers to find out what rate they are paying to start. It's so difficult to find and retain good (and honest) individuals in those types of positions. I feel your frustration. Good luck and keep us posted of your progress!
