The tragedy in Virginia is haunting me but also causing me to wonder if there were any steps that could have been taken predict or prevent. Another thing I ponder is the motivation the quiet student h

Please don't try to make this into a "science". Just like a mad dog in the street, you will know the signs when you see them. You should then take immediate, appropriate action to ensure that A)you and others are protected, and B)the questionable party gets help. Don't ignore the signs and don't be stupid. You may have forgotten this little Math 101 Equation: Stupidity + Ignorance = Death.

How do you combat ignorance? Ask appropriate questions. It's ok to "pry" if you think lives could be at risk. Document everyhing. Involve superiors. Involve Legal. Involve Police if you feel threatened. You need not call SWAT in to "take down" the employee, but a subtle discussion with a detective could save lives.

How do you combat stupidity? If you have to ask.....

Clarification for lindaleepowell--As I understood Sen Schumer's bill, it would simply set a national standard for reporting a "danger to self / others," to go into a database that already exists, and is used by reputable firearms dealers. The problem w/ the database is that vagueness and inconsistency plague the pickup procedures around the country. This legislation would simplify and clarify the inclusion criteria and method. It would require a judge to rule that someone's history justified inclusion in the "no-firearms" database. No therapist, panel of therapists, or any other non-judicial entity could add anyone's name by their own unilateral action.

Good luck with the database for fire arms merchants. Many of the guns available to US citizens are illegal in Canada. We've had a gun control registry in place for several years that even collects information on hunting guns etc. You'd think that we'd be a lot safer because of it, but nevertheless, only a couple of months ago, there was a similar shooting spree at a Montreal college. Our stricter gun control and registry did not prevent this person from obtaining illegal firearms. If someone is obsessed with violent ideations, they will find a way to obtain the weapons to live out their fantasies. These folks are sick, not stupid. Stupidity is the realm of governments.
