For us, the type of background check is determined by position. Since we are a financial institution we include credit checks, criminal background, as well as past employment, and education verification for those positions that require a degree. I don't believe there is a one size fits all.

I agree with the previous post: "One size does not fit all." For ALL positions, we do a criminal background check. If the person will have to drive as part of employment, we check driving records. If the person will have to do financial work, we do a credit check. If a post-high-school degree is required for the work, we check validity thereof and obtain transcripts. Assuming the candidate is not a recent graduate with little or no job history, we check with the last 3 immediate supervisors. If the person will be in a position where fluency in a language other than English is required, we conduct part of the interview in that language, with a native speaker of it.

True, one size does not fit all, however, we run the same background checks on every candidate. The criteria we look for differs for each position though. We may run credit checks on all candidates but if the person isn't working in financials then a poor credit history wouldn't necessarily discredit them from getting the job.

We do MVRs on all candidates because most jobs here require having a valid license. Criminal checks also on all candidates. We only do a financial check on people going into mid-management and above or in our accounting department.

With respect to collecting credit reports on all your candidates, why collect information you are not using? In recent years, employer records have become an ever increasing source for identity theves - in addition, the EEOC (The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) recently noted some adverse impact problems associated with firms thatcredit reports when they are not job-related.

Our company conducts a standard BI for every employee that joins; however, based on client contractual compliance we may have to include credit checks, drug testing, employment for all previous employers and a national criminal scan, etc.

We work with a background/reference checking company out of Atlanta. They were very consultative in showing us which background checks to conduct for each employee type. Not to mention you can purchase their services and just pay ala carte for all of the reports you want to run. www.e-verifile.com is the web domain. Good Luck.

Although some sort of background check is good risk management practice, most people don't have bad credit or an arrest record, so a background check is only one way to vet a candidate. A thorough reference check using an online system such as SkillSurvey.com could yield the best evidence of the candidate's future success or whether they should be meployed by you at all.
