I am conducting research on the average cost to staff a temporary employee in the United States, and I have been unable to find reliable averages for the costs associated with 1) training/orientation of new employees, 2) administrative costs, and 3) the cost of termination.
Training/orientation costs would include the costs of tutorials, instructor led training, talent guidebooks, etc. According to Training Magazine, in 2003, the average cost associated with training/orientation was 2.5% of the employee's wage. So, for instance, if the employee made $10 an hour, then the employer would pay 25 cents each hour for training/orientation of the employee.
Administrative costs would include payroll processing, W-2, W-4, hiring packets, I-9, etc. for new employees.
Cost of termination would include unemployment claims administration and severance pay. With unemployment at a low level, I would expect this cost to be a very small percentage of the employee's wage, probably 1% or less.
If possible, please provide a national average for each of the costs above based on the employee's wage. For instance, training could be 2.5% of the employee's wage on average, admin costs could be 10% of the employee's wage on average, and termination costs could be 0.5% of the employee's wage on average. If national averages are not available for these costs, feel free to provide other pertinent information relevant to the research being performed. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
