I am wondering if anyone else has had stalker applicants, and if so, how they handled it.

I posted a position for one of our buildings and this applicant applied. He called several times before he actually spoke with me (he refused to leave a messag.) When we finally spoke he first told me he'd expected to speak "with a man" and then said he'd like to talk to the head of the department and insisted I give him the dept. heads cell number. I of course refused, and explained our application process, and that if we were interested we'd call him. He called several more times and spoke with the receptionist as well as several other employees insisting on knowing where I was, what type of meetings I was in and why I was never available to speak with him (again, he refused to leave any messages.)

I recently posted another position at another building for the same type of job, except for it's a managerial position and the calls have started again. I spoke with him today (after he'd called three times in an hour) and reiterated the process, and told him that I was aware he'd gotten pushy with our receptionist and that his behavior was unacceptable and would do nothing to help in the application process.

He has already called back (I was unavailable) and I am at a loss as to what more I can say to him short of "don't ever call here again!"

I should note, that this position is a union position, and he found out about it through the union - I am not sure if this makes a difference on how to handle him.

This being a union position should not have any bearing on how you handle this person. Here's what I reco you do:

First, tell everyone who receives calls from this person to not answer those calls. If they do answer the phone when the stalker calls, they should transfer the call to you immediately (and stress "immediately" - they should not pause to listen to aything the stalker is saying to them). If the stalker leaves voicemail messages, those should be forwarded to you as well. Tell these people that they should document all this activity as it happens.

If the stalker calls you directly, try not to pick up. If you do pick up (whether by mistake, or because it's a call that's been forwarded to you), tell the stalker that you'll look into his issue. And then get off the phone, right away. If he leaves you voicemail messages, save them (and those that have been forwarded to you) but don't respond to them. Document everything.

Hopefully these tactics will cause the stalker to become bored and fade away. However, if they don't, at least you'll have all kinds of documentation proving he's a nutcase should a discrimination or related claim raise its ugly head.
