"Cold-calling" is something that salespeople do - they call companies and ask them if they want to buy their (the salespeoples') products or services.

"Headhunting" is something that external recruitment agencies do - they call people at different organizations to try and lure them away to jobs at their (the headhunters') client organizations.

Headhunters sometimwes cold-call in that they will call potential client organizations to see if they (the potential clients) want to hire them (the headhunters) do a little headhunting for them.

I'm a Corporate Recruiter in healthcare. Before this position, I was a Contract Sourcer for Healthcare, a direct hire "Recruiter/Sourcer". I, too, cold-called. Healthcare recruiting is difficult. We (2 peers and I who had senior-level recruiting experince) designed a in-house course to teach the other recruiters how to do cold-calling. It's a form of reaching the passive applicant. Like all tools, it has its successes and its failures.

Sure it is. Only time it really isn't is when the headhunting targets one company so extensively as to significantly inhibit its ability to conduct its business.

Cold calling or head hunting might not be eithical under these circumstances:

1. the person being called was placed in their current position by the same company that is now calling.

2. the person being called is under a contract and is being induced to break the contract.

I noted one of the first responses indicated that headhunting involved calling 'clients' to entice employees away. It's my opinion that in addition to the above unethical practices it would be unethical to attempt to recruit any employee from a client company.

Along the same lines we have had issues with clients who build Internal Non-recruit clauses into their vendor agreements this is a way to subvert agencies from sourcing directly from clients......which I feel very strongly is unethical.

Using company phones on company time to talk with headhunters does not seem right to us. Our company would have a major problem with current employees taking calls from headhunters. Likewise, we are not interested in candidates who are willing to do this to their current employers. Their loyalty would always be in question. To us, this is unethical. For these reasons, when we use headhunters, we ask that they not call into other companies to fill our openings. This limits their efforts to networking, posting, advertising, etc. to come up with candidates. It takes us longer to find the professionals that we need, but we believe it's worth it.
