We have used three vendors in the last four years. Vendor A had served the company for many years but was found to be missing a lot of stuff when we had a 2nd vendor run some of the same BGCs. We switched to vendor B who did a better job but were still letting stuff slip through. Again running the same BGC through several competing vendors we found vendor C caught the most hits. There have been a few bumps in the road over the last two years with this vendor but have hung with them thus far. Incidentally we do pre-employment BGCs but also re-checks for promotion to certain management positions. Its interesting what you find on these 2nd checks.

Somebody who would use a forum like this to push their own product lacks the ethics and professionalism to actually represent anything of value. Consequently Nork's advice is awesome and spot one.

Nork congrats on policing these forums you are truly doing a service to the "greater good". I hope you sense my sarcasm here...several of these posts will ask for assistance with issues they may have internally. If their are active vendors....myself being one of them.... that feels our service could benefit these folks then why not give them the option to make that decision. Its certainly your right to choose not to work with these vendors that post on these forums but I think it would be best for you keep your comments in this regard to yourself. Btw I have forged some solid professional relationships through networking on posting boards like this one and think you probably have as well. I know its hard for you to believe but vendors and clients can exist in harmony.

Using a third party vendor is the way to go. I've been a client of LexisNexis for more than 10 years. They will thoroughly educate you on the background process, and they indemnify you related to the information they return to you. Very few, if any vendors will do that.

I've read both sides of the "vendors who post on an HR Professional's forum", and I must side with Nork. No matter how well intentioned a vendor/sales rep might be in responding, the bottom line is that they are motivated by profit, not by sympathy. My personal experience has been that the sales rep only knows what the company has told them, not what the customers have experienced and complained about. There is an old Chinese proverb that applies: "You know that a salesman is lying when his lips move."
If a vendor representative really wanted to provide a valuable service to forum readers, the rep would list the types of things that one ought to be aware of when doing Criminal Background Checks (CBCs) and not "puffing" or telling the world how great they are.

I'm not really interested in the ongoing debate the replies have become, but...
I do want to thank saamodt. I did actually end up going with LexisNexis for screening services and have been very happy.

Thank you, Nork. So many HR resources are ruined by vendors. Our local HR association meetings are crawling with vendors too. I read thse posts for similar experience from practitioners, not more sales spam. I wish I could filter out any responses from vendors to my queries.
