Hello:
I am interested in learning about the employee referral programs of other companies as I am trying to implement a less manual and more attractive program for my company. What process do your internal candidates have to follow when referring someone? Is anyone utilizing an employee portal or are you tracking referrals manually? How long until internal associates receive payment and how much do they receive, etc.?
Thanks in advance for any help.

My company has a very simple employee referral program. All the current employee does is fill out a form with the person's name and contact information, along with their name, title, and work location. Our Recruiting team goes through our hiring process with the referred person. Should we hire them, the employee who referred the employee would get their bonus upon the new employees completion of their first 6 months. Since we are non-profit we cannot afford to pay out as much in these bonuses but we give $300 to those who are hired for 35+ hours, $200 for 16-34 hours, and $100 for those under 16 hours.

Thanks for your reply. Your program does sound pretty simple, but do you also conduct any type of due diligence with your referring employee? For example, do you find out how they know the referral, how long, strengths, etc? The reason I ask is I work for a large publicly traded company and we receive many resumes from candidates who say they were referred by an associate which many times turns out not to be the case. They may have received the name through a friend of a friend of a friend and the associate gets the referral award without any accountability. I know it sounds strange, but it happens all the time.

Have had several different types of referral programs over the years, depending on the companys needs. Most work as the previous poster outlined, a flat fee for any referral or a graduated scale for different classes of jobs. In some cases I recall companies paying $2500 for very specific, hard-to-find positions back in the dotcom days.
Paying the referral bonus is usually delayed 60 days to 6 months and assumes both the new employee and the one who referred him/her are still employed. You might want to consider what mechanism youre going to use to link the employee to a specific applicant. Also how youre going to deal with multiple employees claiming to have referred the same applicant. You just need some ground rules.
