As an educator, I have an "outlier" comment -- a FREE "site." Call one or several of the applicant's professors. I am consistently amazed at how few calls I get from prospective employers (I have been teaching at university part-time 29 years), even when I encourage students to use me as a reference. Like any observant educator, I can speak to work habits, punctuality, oral and written communication skills, and teamwork skills (students work in teams on course projects). |

I understand that most responders here are interested in information about companies that provide professional background checks; but I wanted to comment about using that "free" resource of asking a faculty member for a personal recommendation.
While it seems like a no brainer; in today's litigious society, there are concerns that faculty members should be aware of. NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) has a great publication on this topic. We have been happy with A-Check America. They are very thorough and accurate. Their salesforce is customer-focused and continues to provide consulting services about screening long after the contract has been signed.One additional benefit -- they are a WMBE Tier 1 Diversity company.

We use HireRight. They have a quick turnaround time and seem to be very aggressive. In fact, we had one prospective employee who complained to me about their aggression. They are all based in India and use Western first names. I wonder if anyone uses U.S. based background screeners? I'd love to give our own citizens a job. |
