I was just wondering if anyone any ideas on some standard interview questions I could ask Entry Level Customer Service Representatives. Because a large number of my interviewees have little or no experience, it's hard to ask those typical probing interview questions.

The position doesn't require any specific skills sets, other than basic computer skills and good communication skills.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

You can ask behaviorally-based questions that will provide useful information about the candidates' communication skills. Even if they don't have any previous experience in the field, the candidates (like the rest of us) have probably had experiences in their past when they had to manage conflict, deal with the public, and be pleasant in the face of adversity. Previous behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. Additionally there are some personality characteristics (i.e., extraversion, emotional stability, etc.) that you might want to examine, as they can often be predictive of performance in similar positions. Good luck!

Good point Matt~
Questions like tell me about a time when your work was criticized? This question is especially prevalent in job interviews for positions that need someone who can think on their feet and speak under pressure. Or try if you had to describe yourself with one word what would it be. That usually promotes some interesting responses. You can also ask questions to get inside the persons moral fiber and work ethic.
I have been hiring people for a long time now and remember when I first started interviewing I was overly friendly. I was stressed about making the person feel at ease so I went out of my way to make them comfortable. Consequently hiring a couple of people that did not possess the proper skill set. I did a lot of homework read a lot of books, and came up with a pretty standard approach after that.

Then there was a period of time when I wasted all my time searching monster, yahoo job boards, and going bleary eyed reading resume after resume of unqualified candidates.

Lately we have been using the recruiting marketplace Dayak that has improved considerably; there's a bit more incentive there for recruiters to find good candidates. It's certainly frustrating to interview prospective hires only to discover that they don't possess very essential skills.

Good luck with your search!
Renee

I would like to thank all of you that responded so far. I'm going to try some of the suggestions and see how they work. I especially like the "describe yourself in one word" question, I'm sure I'll get some interesting responses from that one. Thanks again and any other suggestions/ideas would be much appreciated.
