I receive calls several times a day from jobseekers with this question..."can I get an interview?". This is normally the second question asked, right after they ask if we're hiring. Well, of course we're hiring that's why the ad is posted online/in the newspaper. I understand it is my part of my job duties to enlighten any potential candidate about the position(s) being offered at my company, but would it hurt them to do a little research? Why would I interview you when I don't know anything about you, like where you worked, what position are you inquiring about, your qualifications, skills, etc. Some don't even bother to send a resume, just a phone call and here it comes....."can I get an interview?". NO, you cannot get an interview. Do a little research, send a resume, you can even ask me a few questions about our company just don't ask me for an interview if this the first we've talked to each other.
Sorry for the rant, it's been a long week. TGTIF (Thank Goodness Tomorrow Is Friday).

Why don't you try "No Phone Calls, Please" in your ad. And if you're putting your phone number in the ad, take it out. Otherwise, you will get these calls. Your choice - whether you get a few calls that annoy you or a few with legitimate questions about the company.

That makes plenty of sense, but I don't have a problem with people calling me...I have a problem with people who call with absolutely no clue what company they are calling. I've thought about not putting my number in the ads, but my boss always tells me to give the candidates at least two (2) ways to make contact.

Your problem is that you've given the slackers an easy way out. No resume, no application - just make a phone call.
But if you must have a phone contact, make it a recorded message line that says something like "Hello and welcome to MondoMega Corporation's recorded employment line. We are currently hiring for the following positions: Slacker I, Problem Employee III, Absentee Expert II. If you would like to be considered, please mail your resume to (address here) or email your resume to
That should satisfy your boss and keep you off the phone answering the "Are you hiring?" question.

I had to choose between email, fax, or my direct line. Fax would have been a good option, but sifting through about 50-75 faxed resumes per week was too much of a hassle. I'll just have to learn to screen my phone calls a bit better. Thanks for the suggestions.

nork,
That's an awesome idea and very funny by the way. I'll run it by my boss and see if he goes for it. He prefers me and the hr staff to directly speak to potential candidates, but a message like the one listed above would definitely save time and help us weed out those interested in the Slacker I position. Thank you for your suggestion, it will be taken into serious consideration.

At my last job, we actually started keeping track of how many phone calls we got each day and about how long we were on the phone with people.
When we showed the VP the volume of calls and the actual time we spent on the calls, which cut down the time we could spend on more productive tasks, she agreed to implement a "job hotline."
