Hello,
I am a corporate recruiter who has never had to utilize cold calling to find passive job seekers. I researched the internet to try and find ways to get started (i.e. scripts, getting past gate-keepers ect.) but have not had much success. Does anyone have more information they can share on how I can get started?

I may catch a lot of flak for saying so, but I have never found cold-calling to be an efficient use of my time for recruiting. Back in the late 90s IT boom raiding was popular and sometimes the only way to fill a position that required a scarce skill set. Then, if I needed a programmer with a specific background I might attend a networking meeting of programmers and ask people there who they knew that might have such skills. I would then followed up with the individual mentioned to see if he/she might be interested in the opportunity I had; or knew someone who might be. It was a form of cold calling that produced more results than simply calling into a company blind.
Receptionists are frequently briefed to be on the look out for head-hunters, they will often not forward calls if the caller does not have a name. Back in those days it was not uncommon for raiders to misrepresent themselves as a doctors office, a relative or a school councilor in order to get through to the employee they wanted to speak with. Such tactics gave head-hunters and cold-calling a stigma that still lingers.
Over all I found that networking and mining resumes on and off web boards to be more productive.

Whether or not you use cold calling depends on the type of candidates you are seeking.
If you're looking for anything below director level, then cold calling is not productive. As noted above, getting leads from resume boards or networking is far more productive at that level. Unfortunately, many small business owners think cold calling is a low cost means to solve recruiting problems - if cold calling is all you do at this level of hire, the staffing goals won't be met.
But if you're going for Director and above, it's a lot easier to call into a company and ask for the Director, Strategic Sourcing (for example) or Director, Tax Accounting. As you might imagine, this is much easier for you and for the receptionist than calling in and asking to speak to a C Sharp programmer. It's also pretty easy to get the name of these people or similar people simply by using networking sites such as Linked In or business info sites such as ZoomInfo.
