We are looking for a part-time recruiter, but don't want to pay an hourly rate. Are there typical arrangements for recruiters that pay on placement (other than a % of the candidate's salary)?

What about a set amount? (Like $1,000 or @2,000 or whatever.)

I sincerely doubt you'll find a good recruiter willing to take on work on that basis unless the dollar amount you are offering is roughly equivalent to a % fee.

I'm surprised you don't want to pay an hourly rate. I am a contract recruiter who bills simply by the hour with no placement fees. Typically, this method is very cost effective, saving companies thousands of dollars compared to paying agency fees or salaried recruitment staff.

I'm assuming when you say part-time you mean as the need occurs not part-time hours. To make this attractive to a Recruiter that works on a % of salary commission you would need to guarantee a few things. Like you agree to make X number of hires with that person this year. Also if all the hires are a certain type it makes the recruiting easier for example you agree to pay $3-5k for each Maintenance Tech hired and will be hiring 4-5. Also if you offer and exclusive to the recruiter and then not compete against the recuiter by running your own ads. You can put a time limitation on it but at least the recruiter knows if they deliver a decent candidate in the time frame they have an excellent chance of being paid.

I know of a couple consultants that will charge a flat fee for a slate of candidates. This includes identification, pre-screening and technical interviews. The kicker is that they leave negotiations and scheduling to you and are paid upon presentation of candidates, not hire. This has been very successful for a multitude of companies looking to utilize their own HR team while saving their teams time on identification and big placement fees $$$!

What seems to be the going rate for a percentage when recruiting someone. And do you find that many are doing contingency hiring?

Depends on the position. Typically, a professional hire for an engineer, accountant, etc runs about 25%. But business in the recruiting biz is a bit slow, so you should be able to knock that down to 20% easily; 15% for a non-technical contingency placement.

Thanks for all the comments. Any ideas on the best place to post for a part-time recruiter?

A local SHRM chapter might be a good starting point. You can also try craigslist.org
