Nork,

thanks for keeping the boards honest! I love some of the linkedin discussions, but it can become a forum for self-promotion. I'm glad this forum is not like that. and if anyone does feel the need to self-promote...at least identify that you are doing so.

btw, references from companies using services are much more convincing than self-promotion.

Good grief. Someone's not reading the posts above or doesn't care.

Since it's been my experience that it's usually the latter, I'd encourage readers to specifically not use the services of any vendors who post advertisements for their services on these forums. Ever.

I had great success with a company here in California, HIRO Staffing Solutions. I needed two EDL programmers which are not that easy to find, especially ones with a Government Security Clearance. Give them a call. Ask for Gwen, tell her Denise Gould-Davies referred you. There number is 858-412-6967.

Good Luck!!

are you looking for someone to outsource the recruiting to or are you seeking agencies that can provide you with candidates?

also--any specifics on the type of IT people you are looking for? i.e ERP (SAP or Oracle), networking types, developers (Java, C++, C#, etc) You'll find some firms are better at particular areas based on their network.

I responded with my own information - self promotion - as described in this forum. I wasn't aware that was taboo and apologize to the group. I have appreciated the learning opportunity here. Best regards!

I hope by now you have selected your vendor. If not, I hope my comments help you. It's really more of here's the questions I've either been asked when I was a supplier or what I would ask then I was hiring. Right from the get-go you should have established your selection criteria, or having seen responses from vendors you can use the responses to help you formulate that criteria now.
Review what the firms are offering: do they supply local talent, out-of-town talent, access to scarce or specialty skills, what are the services of the firm, e.g. do they screen applicants for you? what do they screen for? only technical competencies, how thorough of a screen? or do you need to mnage the screen process? do they screen for cultural fit to your organization, communications skills? what pool of skills do they have access to? what other criteria do they use to screen applicants they will send to you? e.g. background checks, drug tests, etc..
When evalauting the vendor what is their business model? do they place "staff augmentation" or do they prefer to "project manage" the resources they supply. Most importantly is what do you want and need from the vendor(s) for your company to be successful.
What about commercial arrangements, payment terms, termination, dispute resolution, etc.
What is their track record with the skills you are looking for.
Get references for the firm and get references for the people they present to you for the roles you are hiring for. Check references for individuals you extend an offer to. I do this after extending the offer.
What is the firms commitment to you, the timeframe, what if the person leaves, how much time for a replacement and will the vendor commit to finding you a replacement, and potentially training that person so that your IT dept is not disrupted.
If, as some have asked, you are considering offshore or even off-site talent you'll need to do a lot more due diligence, including how the firm will access your applications, the security, etc. etc. However, I din't get the feeling that you were looking for off-site let alone offshore.
Good luck and as I said I hope you've already found a reliable supplier in your area.

Not knowing specific companies out in your area, I recommend finding out about the talents of their recruiters and how long the recruiter has been recruiting within your market. Also, hwo do they find people? Are they going to the job boards (CareerBuilder, Monster, DICE, etc) like everyone else? You can do that yourself, right? If they are not actively engaged in local IT user groups and have not been in the local market for a while, then you should keep looking.

I believe the original question was how to and help on selecting a good IT staffing service. I am not self promoting my service.

If I were you I would establish more than one relationship with vendors 2-4 but now more than that. Competition is good for you from a cost and evaluation of candidate stand point.

Look for a firm that understands your technical requirments as well as your corporate culture. They can recruit candidates with the technical ability as well as the "business savvy" to understand how their work effects the entire corporation.

Things to look for:
* good references that you can call from
their clients and candidates
/consultants
* their size should not matter as much as
their ability to deliver
* finacially secure
* stable internal recruiting team, low
turnover

The list come go on and on, but I hope this helps as start.

Good luck there are a lot of us out there...a lot of good ones and a lot of not so good ones.
