Hello,

I am searching for studies which focus on the human-related changes caused by the high-speed-development of IT.

Are we at the end of productivity-raise?
How long can people cope with the changes? Is it possible to concentrate on the contents of our work or do we mainly concentrate on "how can I learn to work with this new software which will be released in 6 months?

Please contact me, if you know something about studies on this field.
Thank you!

Ana

I just some reading on the question: "Does advanced manufacturing (e.g.: the use of advanced technology in manufacturing) and total quality managment
depend on the achievement of task flexibility and high commitment management practices?" I'm not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for in terms
of reading/ studies on productivity & technology, but it is related. Some good reading about the technology aspect of this subject (which discusses info on studies) may be:

Change, London: Sage.

*Legge, K (19950 Human Resource Management: Rhetoric & Realities, (Chapers 5-7). Basingstoke: Macmillan

*Snell, S.A. & Dean, JW (1992) Integrated Manufacturing & HRM: A Human Capital Perspective. Academy of Mgt Journal, 35: 3, pp. 467-504.

I hope this helps! -Lisa

Thank you Lisa!

Your input is an interesting aspect.
But it seems that the focus of this literature is on the "production-line-productivity". What I want to focus on is the productivity in the administration (white colar-workers)- for example in the financial department of a company.
My question is:
"Can we really be more productive with a handy, a telephone, a laptop and a PC, a digital notebook and and and ...?
how much can we cope with? and how much time do we loose by trying to cope with the new IT instead of "working productively".

Maybe you have an idea about additional literature or articles.

Thank`s!

Dear ana:

Unfortuntately, I don't have much advice to offer on this one! I went through my reading lists for the upcoming term, and one article stood out as a possibility (though it's quite old)... I haven't read it, but the title looked interesting. If nothing else, the journal it appears in may be a good one for you to check out:

Kemp N. and Clegg C (1987) Information Technology and Job Design: A case study on computerized numerically controlled machine tool working. Behaviour and Information Technology, 6(2), pp. 109-124

The only other thing I can think of is an article by Karen Legge which you may find helpful(ish)... It covers the HR professionals marginalized role in chosing which IT solutions to dole out to the workforce... Legge argues that HR professionals don't have a enough of a choice in what types of technologies are adoped in firms. This may have some serious HR implications on the productivity of the workforce, since HR managers should be involved in making sure employees use technology productively (e.g. through effective work design and training).

Legge, K. The Role of Personnel Specialists: Centrality or Marginalization? pp. 20-42 in Clark J. (editor), (1993) Human Resource Management and Technical Change, London: Sage.

I hope this helps some! Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

-Lisa
