Internet Search Technique
Discuss how to choose system that will yield the best results, as well as how to maintain it, and how to calculate its return on investment.
Is anyone familiar with the advanced internet search technique called "xray?" How do you do it, or where can I find a good explanation of it? Thanks.

Please keep in mind that this is a very short version of the answer I could give you. Much of the complexity of the answer stems from the fact that different search engines all use commands differently. That said, here goes- "xray" refers to the commands used to examine documents on a particular server. It can help search through lots of web pages to find the type of information, in the case of recruiting, people with certain skillsets, really fast. The commands you use depend on the search engine you choose, as they all index pages differently.
For example- If you're looking for microbiologists, a big university with a medical school might be a good place to look. Being a Bostonian for many years, I chose Harvard. Their server is harvard.edu. The command to xray on altavista (advanced search) is "host:"
so the search string is:
host:harvard.edu AND microbiologist
this gave me 22 pages of results, some junk, but many of which were bios or news briefs with names of microbiolgists with some connection to Harvard .
