Can anyone provide tips on career development for a person interested in getting into HRIS? I'm not sure what opportunities are out there...how to get to them.

Current status: working towards Masters in Human Resource Management. Currently completed one year. Doing internship with HRIS solutions provider. Upon graduation, will have two HRIS classes and one Database Management class (in addition to multiple MBA and HR classes).

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you are on the right track, but be sure to include professional organization memberships in your plan. Affiliation can be very beneficial. Whether for networking purposes or for information on the latest topics and specific training and seminars to keep you on the cuting edge. The two I have found to be most impotant and helpful are SHRM (both locally and nationally - you should be able to find one in your area, but they are on the web nationally at shrm.org and you can find out how to contact your local chapter there as well. The local chapter should be less expensive to join, but both are good. With a national membership you can access their website for HR info and latest developments as well as networking. (they also have a sub group on technology&consulting that you can join in additon to the general membership)......... The other organization is IHRIM (this is the HR technology hub organization!)
Most Importantly.... enjoy the journey and Good Luck!

I really like IHRIM and have been a member since 1989. My chapter in the Northeast has great local seminars monthly. Also enjoy going to the annual conferences. Learned lots and made lots of networking contacts.

You'll even see on the ihrim web site (IHRIM.org) that they now offer courses in HRIS usually 2 - 3 days long.

Good Luck!
