Last year I was involved in implementing SAP within a global company, and your question was the source of many discussions before during and after.

At the end of the day a single instance of SAP was chosen, primarily for cost reasons. Costs included hardware and software, along with ongoing support (single team), implementation (being easier), and lower data integration costs ongoing.

The down side of this approach as limitations in truly global operations. Technical barriers appeared with language code pages limiting legislative reporting in some countries. Running payroll was also a major issue, and in many cases this was outsourced or additional local systems were utilised.

This is a large area and depending upon what type of HRMS you are looking at, the approach can be very different. For example as above a Payroll system is very different from an ESS.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

I noticed from your post that you were involved in omplementing Sap last year. My company was bought out by a European company last August that is implementing SAP as the HRMS of choice. Right now my location (in the US) is struggling with a customized version of Infinium running on an AS400 platform, installed in the mid 80's so I'm very open to a new system. I haven't been able to find much on SAP HR - we were put in touch with a US affliate of the consultant our European counterparts are using to install SAP but they have not come back with much information. I'm assuming you implemented in stages for the modules. If so what modules do you use and to what extent? I'm in the inital fact gathering stage when it comes to SAP so any information you can give would be greatly appreciated. My location has approx 500 employees with the possibility of becoming the US Corporate site after 1/1/02 therefore encompassing approx. 1200 ee's.

for training on SAP check www.DACG.com
although I am clearly biased (I work for them!) we have a long track record of providing training / support / documentation for SAP implementations on a global scale.

I find that most implementations tend to go with a group of key module areas (org management / personnel admin) before then adding on other modules at a later stage
