The terminology you use is going to be relative to your audience and the context of your presentation. Human Resources Information Technology HRIT is usually used in reference to the hardware and software used to establish your HR systems solution. Human Resources Management Systems (HRMS) is commonly used in reference to a technology platform that is designed to serve as a knowledge exchange or knowledge management system. Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) is commonly used to refer to the systems technologies used and managed by HR; however, the terminology Information Systems is all encompassing to cover all methods of communications utilized within a system and not necessarily the technology, hardware and software. I think HRIS is the most common term used throughout the HR community to identify the technology platforms being utilized to manage HR related data. When referring to total integration of data to support decision making, both human resources and operations, commonly you will hear this referred to as an Enterprise solution. Normally this data and systems integration has to have a common
Integration platform and delivered in some form of dynamic portal environment. In a sense, your HRIS systems fades away and is all encompassing within your company/enterprise solution that is designed to support your employees. The focus of your internal information systems becomes an outside in focus instead of an inside out focus and nobody really cares who owns the data. Good luck, conceptually this is the direction all companies should be heading, one company wide information system without distinctions relative to departments, just the information your employees need when they need it
