I need some ideas from you experts out there about conducting a Team Building intervention for shift workers. The problem is that the configuration of the team (in terms of faces) changes at every session. We have tried the option of scheduling meetings to coincide with the changes of shifts, but this has been met with some challenges.

Any ideas out there? Please Help.

You didn't say what kind of challenges, or what you've tried before. One idea that comes to mind is a ListBot or Intranet if your employees have access to the internet or email. This way they can read and post when they get time. You can find many on the Internet, if your company doesn't already have an internal Intranet.

I worked with an organization who need "quick forming teams" to do complex activites (like fly airplanes). These pilots often were meeting for the first time but needed to have a flawless performance. The heart of that system that worked impressively was upfront training and standard operating procedures. The training was around the procedures but also with a great deal of communication training and structure a common language around communitcation, workload management, risk management, problem identification and solutions. They were able to give a description of the concept, desired outcomes and what is was not. Everyone knew clearly what there job was and how it related to great mission.

Hope that helps.

My questions to you is what is the business reason for "team building?" Are the groups you are trying to build into teams really teams or just work groups who need to understand their relationship to other work groups? Team building for team building sake is a mistake. What is the issue that leads you to believe team building is the answer, and what have you done to validate it (needs assessment)?

This is a very challenging issue for any healthcare leader. We have been very successful with teambuilding activities following dramatic changes in scheduing of employees. We moved all employees to 12 hour shifts and then assigned them to set rotating schedules. This allows the same employees to work together on the same set schedule. This is not without its drawbacks, however, we have found that consistnely working with the same group has a positive effect on team work, communication, and accountability. This also allows for off-shift team building activities with staff who are working together since they all have the same days off. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much. It really does. We are at a tail end of a major transition from inter-disciplinary to trans-disciplinary teams.
We embarked upon a major needs assessment (using the Performance Consulting Model by Robinson and Robinson) to determine the root causes of why the groups are unable to function in this way. Of course the list was many. Some of the items were role rigidity, lack of practice and understanding of what it means to be a team member in this new way of delivery. We have made some progress, but the journey is very challenging. One thought I did have was not tojust focus on interpersonal skills, but to place more energies on operational and process issues.

While the tone of this message makes me quite uneasy, I thought it best to respond to your questions rather than ignore it.

Yes, we have been through a thorough needs assessment/gap analysis to validate the need for team building. The team building that is refered to is that of transitioning a group of people who where just that - a group operating in what is called an interdisciplinary model of care - into what is called a transdiciplinary team. This "group" of individuals need to be able to work together collaboratively, as a team, towards a common goal - meeting the patients goals (I forgot to mention that we are a rehab centre)

So we are not "team building for team building sake" - it is imperative that we have effective teams of practitioners operating in this mode if we are to meet our business goals
