I have joined a company that has never had a Human Resources Manager. It has about 200+ employees with two Locations in Florida, One in Texas and One in Washington State. The company has been around for 39 Years. It is a manufacturing company. In trying to place programs in place, such as Drug free work Place, Reveiws, Vacation & Benefits, I have encountered tremendous walls. From Poor communications methods to unwillingness to change. The company's strength is also it's weakness. They have many employees and Managers that have almost 30 years service. They have been doing the same thing all these years and now they don't see why the need for change. Obviously the owner sees a need for change, or he would not have hired a Human Resources Manager and a Comptroller. But he too, is reluctant to dealing with change. I suggested to have the managers trained on "How to deal with Organizational changes" He thought it was a great idea and wants me to put one together. Of course when I suggested it I meant to have them go to a seminar, but he prefers it on site. I have many books, but I really want to have move visual or maybe activities to get the managers to interact with the changes training, instead of lecturing. I need guidance or suggestions on where to find visual training and activities.

I don't have any suggestions at this point - but will keep my eyes open for you. I certainly have empathy for your situation - as I am in the same one. I just joined a large non profit a few months ago as head of hr and implementing procedures that they never had or had to adhere to is an effort. My problem is with senior staff (my counterparts) not acting as leaders in change implementation. Perhaps providing a workshop on change - particularly for senior management would be the impetus for their change. Good luck!

I did some research on Change in the Workplace back in March/April 2000 for my last semester in school. If you have access to a University, I suggest you go to a search through their library or even your local library. Either of those should be able to provide you with a wealth of information at little to no expense to you. You'll be able to find periodicals, texts, etc. there to assist you. I would also recommend you contacting your locat American Society of Training & Development chapter. They might be able to provide you with some assistance also.

Best of luck to you.

A couple of things I would suggest from experience:
A training session isn't going to change behavior.
The owner is shirking responsibility by having you take the lead. You really ought to facilitate his/her actions.
The finest resource on this topic that I have found is "Leading Change" by John Kotter. I used that and put together an integrated action plan for working changes through the organization. So each manager had to determine what changes needed to be implemented (on marching orders from those at the top, if nothing else) and then work through how to implement in a way that employees accept the changes. In your case, you may want to do the integrated process with the owner.
Bottom line: Accepting and responding to change must be modeled. Old behavior will not change without a leader modeling new behavior and no longer accepting or allowing the old behavior. I've definitely learned this lesson the hard way.

I would recommend TrainSeek.com. Not only is it a huge database of training materials on many topics, it offers opportunities to preview much of the content and really provides many additional links to other sites where there is additional information. It is one of the best sites I have found for finding commercially available materials.

Hope this helps.
