A number of people have commented that they believe l/ship development is a waste of time and money. Many leaders talk a good game but in reality once the development is complete fall straight back into their old ways. It's like "flogging a group of dead horses!" I would be interested in the views of others on the usefulness or otherwise of leadership development.

You are on the right track for understanding how to make it work. If the leadership training is gone through by the top management and the same top management is instrumental in implementing the change in the organization then you will have the success.

"Smart" managers tend to emulate the leadership style that is successful in their current company. Observe your senior managers and see what style they use. Is it the same as the one you learn in the leadership training? if not you will understand why no amount of training will effect change.

If however, every leader's compensation program was tied to a certain set of behaviors you would see the change you are looking for. Otherwise why would a leader change?

I do not think that leadership training is without merit. I have both attended and facilitated training of this sort. There is certainly a place for this genre of training if an organization is faced with changes. With change, defining or redifining roles of followership/leadership, or membership if you like as well as responsibilities, is paramount to success. I also feel that discussing leadership concepts broadens ones paradigms and allows for introspection. Introspection in turn allows for growth and development on a personal as well as a professional level.

Hi Tony!
Well you are right and you are wrong.
You are right that leadership development can be a waste of time...but only if it is wasted on the wrong people.

You are wrong to think it is always a waste of time. We have a tool that we use called Total View. It helps promote and train the right people for the job.

Email me with questions about Total View or any employment issue.

I think it can be a waste of time if what is being taught isn't being emulated top down 24/7. And if there is no real incentive to be a good leader. If managers are going to get paid big bucks whether they practice good leadership or not, then certainly, it's a HUGE waste of time.

However, if managers are compensated for getting certain business results and those results are achieved through certain behaviors, then it's an worthwhile investment.
