I am conducting a survey of the simulation industry for a US Department of Labor sponsored project at Norfolk State University. The overall goal of this project is to use simulations and visualizations to assist at-risk secondary students in preparing for the workforce. The purpose of this survey is to identify existing simulations and visualizations that could be employed in a high school setting to give the students a "taste" of the work environment. The model we envision is a job skills laboratory that students would attend weekly to investigate work force jobs such as operating heavy equipment, performing maintenance, or installing electrical systems.
My task is to assemble a catalogue of simulations and visualizations that could be used for this purpose. After the catalogue has been assembled (end of May 2001), we will select the most promising candidates and develop a pilot program in the Hampton Roads schools to develop techniques for developing student interest and enthusiasm for joining the work force. Your assistance in identifying available simulations and visualizations for this project would be greatly appreciated. If are aware of applicable programs, please send me a description or provide leads to programs that I should pursue.
