I'm looking for a simple assessment tool to help new supervisors discover their "supervision style" I find that new supervisors have some difficulty with the skills needed, such as delegation. In order to help them through the transition, I'm hoping for an assessment that can let them know the areas of supervision that come "natural" to them and areas or skill sets that they need to work on.

Ther are a number of these. Try the Myers-Briggs if you are qualified to adminster, score and interpret.

Have you looked in the Pfeiffer Annuals? These have been published since the early 80's and are full of free surveys, instruments etc.

There is one called L.E.A.D. which I recall is about leadeship style. A more recent one is in teh 1996 Annual Vol 2 - COnsulting titlede "The High Performance Factors Inventory: Assessing Work Group Management and Practices". Might be useful.

Thanks Roger. I've been looking into the LEAD.

I'm looking for a quick assessment ... say 10 to 16 questions to ID style; e.g., autocratic, democratic, etc.

It seems the assessment tools tell more
than asking people how they see themselves. My aim is to have new supervisors review areas that they have already mastered and ID areas that they need more training in.

Ken Blanchard's Situational Leadership is an excellent tool to assess leadership style and the areas of leadership that need further developing. It's based on a behavioral model which is helpful in determining what to do or not to in a situation.
