A simple way - use an excel spreadsheet to easily see who what training is required and who has completed each training session.

Here at Dell we have installed an on-line system accessible to our certified line trainers where they can document certifications

Keep a master sign in sheet with topic/date as a hard copy. Use your HRIS database to record training on each employee. Reports are easily run.

If those doing the administration don't have access to a computer, try a whiteboard and create a matrix - names down the left side, training events, competencies/job funtions across the top. Color code by Training in progress or Accomplished.

Whether you're tracking training with a computer or on a white board matrix, I think it's important -- especially with on-the-job training -- to track the skills mastered, rather than the training completed. Make a list of the individual tasks required for the position; when the employee can both explain and perform each one, check off that task. It's always a great idea to post these results in a common area (e.g. a white board or bulletin board); an employee who is struggling with a particular task can then approach one who has been "certified" for help.

As there is more and more pressure to measure outcomes of training, I would recommend a computerized assessment of knowledge and or skills. Try www.nocti.org . A computer data based can be tied to any courseware system. Other wise, unless you on intensely monitoring the attendence, people can just sign in and walk out or sign someone elses name. I have had this happen to me coordinating OSHA training.

Be careful

Best Software/ ABRA has a training module that is easy to use and can be set up to track courses required, taken, skills earned, and even assign these requirements by job code. You can set certification renewal times as well as print several canned reports or make your own.

We've recently set up a training tracker in Access. It allows me to also track related costs such as travel expenses (airfare, motel, etc.) to monitor the actual cost of training. Using the database I can produce and e-mail managers reports for their employees, as well as produce individual training year to date reports for the employee themself.

I created a peer led training program with a simple, one page of training requirements for a production job. The lead for the department comes up with the requirements and time frame. Safety issues particular to this job can be included. Floor trainer, safety manager and trainee all sign off. In a hands-on environment in production, it really seems to work.
