I am also given a similar charge to come up with a training needs analysis. I would appreciate any suggestions you receive.

On of the best training needs analysis tools I have seen in a long time is explained in the book, "Training Across Multiple Locations," by Stephen Kremple and R. Wayne Pace. It even includes sample questions for different business units. Steve used this in the fast food industry, but I have adapted it for non-profit very easily. The system is great and can be applied to evaluating basically any business unit.

There is a book out there that I have used and it includes templates on diskette that you can customize:
"Practical Guide to Needs Assessment" by Kavita Gupta. You can get it from Amazon for $44. It is a very easy book/template to use... you can be up and running with a good tool in a short time.

Dear Irfan,

The best way to start is to find out if the organisation has a formal documentation system which records the training requirements of individuals. I have seen in number of cases where there is a recording of training needs in the performance appraisal and the feedback provided to each individual. In the absence of such a formal system, the best way would be to meet key members in the organisation informally and get to know from them areas for development as a whole. This could then be formalised as a questionnaire and data obtained. The compilation of this would give broad areas for training.

In case you have queries, pls get to me on my mail id - jade_rp@mailpuppy.com

Cheers,

Jade
