I have used the following activity with a group of volunteers. I introduce myself without a lot of detail and then state that most of them of only seen me for 1-2 minutes. And then I ask them what are some perceptions they have formed of me by asking some questions like: What kind of car do I drive?, Am I married? How many kids do I have? Pets? Activities? Then I ask them what have they based their answers on. Then I talk about how quickly we form impressions and how they affect future interactions.

Like the last post, I have a series of "mind games" that I often use. For example:

A man gets out of jail and pushes his car to a nearby hotel, where he leaves a considerable sum of money. Next, he pushes his car to a nearby house, where he leaves less money. Whats going on here?

I'll save the answer to see if anyone can figure it out David - The DJC Group

Further to Kathy's suggestion re the 'assumptions' exercise, I have done a similar thing but rather than the group making judgements about me, I have paired them up (all strangers) and asked them to do a similar exercise about each other. They then talk through their responses with each other, explaining why they made them. Not only does this bring out the points about what each of us notices and how we use that data, but also gives powerful feedback about what impressions we are creating about ourselves and how people we meet may be responding to us. Obviously, this exercise needs to be briefed and managed very carefully to ensure no-one is hurt.

When conducting MBTI sessions I often use pictures of Norman Rockwell and ask people to describe what they see. Then I ask them how much of what they are describing is from their interpretation and how much is from fact. I also use some abstract art - some see things while others scratch their head. Great fun.
