I am on a team of individuals putting together a conference on TWI (training within industry). This is NOT a sales pitch, so I won't list the web address. I truly want to know how well the old WWII program is known in the HR/Training arena.

Background... TWI was a training program developed to train the replacement workers filling in for "the boys" sent to fight a war. It quickly and consistenly trained them on skills they did not have.

I signed up to help organize the TWI Summit because TWI addresses several needs faced by today's companies...

- puts in place "standard work" so everyone does the same thing, the same way, all the time
- it quickly and consistently trains a workforce on new job skills
- helps do a skills transfer from a retiring workforce to the replacements

Have you heard of this program? Yes or no?

yes, no, and sort of. Yes, I had an e-mail message inviting me to the conference. No, I had not heard of it before. "Sort of" because it sounds like a model used by a group of workforce professionals who were linking the immediate need for IT workers with women who were transitioning from welfare to work and dislocated workers. They basically partnered with local industry to design acelerated training in a bootcamp format.

Thanks for the reply. Welfare to work... interesting use of a training program.

Someone in retail contacted me recently and provided a case study on how TWI made dramatic improvements in their retail sales team. Sales is an art? Perhaps. But a training program with elements of Deming's work helped in retail sales!

Any other experiences out there?

Yes. It's principles are nearly identical to what has become to be known as "The Toyota Way" of which many more are familiar. The best part about this is that it is "free, free, free" for the using. Check with your local librarian/reference specialist.

I was recently asked by our CEO to research possible TWI trainers. Evidently his former employer (ITW) used TWI as the basis for their Supervisor training in the 60's. I purchased and read the book written by Don Dinero and we had Don in for an initial discussion. So far, we have found limited potential training providors (Don and the TDO organization out of New York)in Ohio. We like the approach and think it would benefit our organization, but finding someone who really knows the material and can present it at a reasonable cost has been our stumbling block.

Yes - I'm familiar with Don and TDO. They will both be preseting at the conference in June. I'll be in 12 months there will be a few dozen certified trainers - doesn't help you now, but TWI is gaining traction at an incredible pace! It's great to see the work that was done 60 years ago is STILL relevant and VERY solidly instructionally sound. Thanks for the message!
