Hi, HR professionals,

Recently I have met many HR people at the HR conference. I have noticed that these people's business title has been changed from Training and Development Manager to OD Manager or Director.

I felt very curious and asked about what that meant to their actual job contents. To my surprise, they didn't give me clear answer. And I asked again what kind of OD tools they had been using in their work to make their Organization much more effective, what let me down was few people could address that.

My questions to you all: what does OD mean? What are the key elements of OD? What are the OD tools we can use in our daily job? I am also a HR guy and hope to get the clear definition.

Thanks

Eric from China

According to Warren Bennis, organization development (OD) is a complex strategy intended to change the beliefs, attitudes, values, and structure of organizations so that they can better adapt to new technologies, markets, and challenges.

Warner Burke emphasizes that OD is not just "anything done to better an organization"; it is a particular kind of change process designed to bring about a particular kind of end result. OD involves organizational reflection, system improvement, planning, and self-analysis.

The term "Organization Development" is often used interchangeably with Organizational effectiveness, especially when used as the name of a department or a part of the Human Resources function within an organization.

Organizational effectiveness is the concept of how effective an organization is in achieving the outcomes the organization intends to produce. The idea of organizational effectiveness is especially important for non-profit organizations as most people who donate money to non-profit organizations and charities are interested in knowing whether the organization is effective in accomplishing its goals.

In order to try to move away from the long standing feud between training and OD, I suggest using the newer and more descriptive term of Organizational Effectiveness. It is my belief that this encompasses the best of both worlds and adds a few new ones as well.

Hi
Training may or may not be a tool within an organizational development context. The reason for changing title in an organization may be to change the emphasis within that organisation - often re-branding exercises are part of the change process.

The term Organizational Development has been under used and recognized in recent years and is starting to 'rear its head' again. I hope this helps your exploring of this exciting topic.
