Dear Members:

My organisation has been conducting techincal trg on a need basis till date. We would now like to mature to the next level of drawing up a trg plan, conducting a TNA as well as setting up an independent Training function.

Can any of you help me in understanding how to do a detailed TNA?

Regards,
Deepa

Deepa, the detail of the TNA depends on the details of your specific situation. Any good book on training design will cover the needs analysis stage. In general, a TNA could be specifically targeted to a particular proposed training program or more global in looking at all the skill needs of the organization.

The output of the needs analysis will be a document that specifies why people need the training, who needs the training, when they need the new skills, where the training may be conducted, what skills need imparting and how it may be imparted. There is more specified than this, however, these are the basics.

The TNA can be based on a simple or more complex competency model. It could also use the following sources of information:

-interviews/surveys with supervisors/managers
-interviews/surveys with employees
-employee performance appraisal documents
-organizations strategic planning documents
-organization/department operational plans
-organization/department key performance indicators
-customer complaints
-critical incidents
-quality data

If you want practical tools, there is a Training Needs Analysis Worksheet and Training Needs Analysis Spreadsheet in both our Training Management Template Pack at http://www.businessperform.com/html/training_management_pack.html and our Training Projects Template Pack at
