Can anyone share what a typical one may include? I assume I could use an excel spreadsheet or is there a program better suited for this? Thanks,

I think this really depends on a few factors. Do you have a budget for a software that you can rely heavily on, perhaps your HR software if you have one? Are you capturing skills for succession planning or a simple database to capture current skill sets for employees who could possibly fill internal job posting. You could create an access database as well. I am not a huge fan of Excel, although when we were a small company we relied heavily on Excel.

The fields to include depend on what you want to use it for. Whether you develop the database in-house or get an off-the-shelf product depends on a range of factors: in-house expertise, budget, complexity, etc. Many of the LMS vendors include a skills inventory module. For standalone applications, you could do a search on Google.

Depending on how many employees you have MS Excel could be OK. However, MS Excel can only give you a flat database. MS Access can give you a relational database from which you can run more complex reports. For large amounts of data, MS Access is also more stable.

Think about your purpose, and what fields you require to achieve your aims. Fields could include:

Last Name
First Name
Department
Team
Skill Category
Skill Item
Skill Description
Last Refreshed
Skill Level
Opportunity for Transfer
Opportunity for Succession

The complexity of the database, what fields you include and what tool you use will be driven by your objectives.
