We all know that web-based education and training (E&T) delivery is on the rise. Some believe that we should shift all training onto an e-learning platform to save many types of costs.

I realize the issue is very complicated, but I'd like to ask for your feedback with the following question.

Question: What types of organizational E&T requirements do you feel can be shifted over to an all web-based learning platform, and (2), what kinds of organizational E&T requirements must only be delivered in the classroom?

Procedual knowledge (e.g. learning applications) should be held in face-to-face classrooms; while as conceptual knowledge could be move in a pure online environment.

Do you mean to say that all "cognitive" learning can be shifted over to e-learning platforms, but "psychomotor" skills training should always be accomplished face-to-face? What about "affective" skills training? Can we trust that this training requirement be accomplished only on-line?

cognitive learning (knowledge-based) and maybe to reinforce material that has already been presented.

I can't think of an example where skills and attitude learning would fit well with this kind of medium.

Can there be any e-learning simulations related to attitudinal skills training?

Here is an example:

A simulation game: The Cost of Life

It's designed to improve kids' global awareness.

Kids'? Wow, I thought we were discussing issues pertaining to adult learners! What about male and female police officers that work different shifts? Sensitivity training was and is required at many (i.e., LAPD) for example. Does anyone have any examples for this situation, or can you suggest another scenario?

Maybe once they have had some sensativity training, as a reinforcement, but just because something is required doesn't mean it should be delivered using a "shotgun" method.

No offense, I have worked with a variety of public entities and law enforcement needs this attitude change more than others. It's a real need that merits the best available format to bring about change. Participants may not take it very seriously if the delivery format doesn't match the type of learning. It's like trying to learn how to ride a bike on-line, there is a whole different set of senses involved. Interpersonal skills are best learned with actual people.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I agree that sensitivity training should mostly done in "real-time." Are there some aspects of sensitivity training that can be accomplished via on-line?

I'm not the expert in this particular subject matter content, but maybe a mixed format that maximizes the advantages of a web-based format.

Cognitive learning and privacy are obvious advantages of web-based education so maybe a "homework" assignment followed by a face-to-face interactive discussion. One example is a psychological bias test that people can complete on-line (I think Harvard has a project going on using this kind of instrument) anyway, people can examine their biases in private and debrief with an instructor.

Again, I am not the expert in this subject area, but I do know that social psychology research suggests that the amount and type of exposure can reduce personal biases.
