At my hospital we are debating the purpose of new orientation, and I would like your input. If a former employee is returning to your organization, and it has been less than six months from the time of his departure, would you make him or her repeat new employee orientation over again? Better yet, what if it has been six or more months since he had any type of formalized training.

I think most new employee orientation programs are geared toward introducing people to the basic practices, procedures, and culture of the organization. Depening on the situation of that employee (whether they need that orientation again because they never really got it the first time) and the organization (whether things have changed recently or how often things change) the basic answers about the 6-month employee is probably "it depends".

I know - great help, huh.

We have returning employees re-do the initial orientation if they have been gone longer than a year. However, if there are required training that they're not current in, they need to catch those up ASAP. Such trainings would include the CMS and Joint Commission biggies and the OSHA required classes as well as CPR, etc.
