I would appreciate any insights about the following situation. I am the HR Manager and report to the CFO of a small, non-union mfg firm. The VP of Operations came to me today about conflicts that he is having with the CFO regarding the installation of an ERP system for our organization. Both the VP of Ops and the CFO report to the company president. It is clear that the president defers to the CFO. I have offered to talk with the CFO to help mediate these conflicts, which have now started to erupt between their mid-level managers who are also working on this project. Any advise for a new HR Manager who has been with the organization 9 months? Thanks!

Here are my initial thoughts. You will need to tread carefully as what you do may end up being a career limiting move. This really is the challenge when HR reports to the CFO and not directly to the President. Going to the President to give advice or to receive advice may be seen by your manager as going over his head.

I feel that the progress that you will make will depend a lot on the quality of your relationship with your manager, the CFO. If your relationship is open and quite solid, one option is to ask each for a mutually agreeable meeting time for them to discuss the issues. Whatever you do, ensure that you keep it as their problem and not take the monkey onto our back.
