Does anyone know where I might find actual statistics listing how much training retention happens WITH reinforcement vs. without reinforcement?

The "International Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Mentoring" has some research regarding specific skills learned via workplace coaching, but I didn't find anything that paired coaching with training.

I'd also recommend looking into Brinkerhoff & Dressler's work (Google search -- but Impact Mapping & Success Case Method might help hone your search to relevant stats) and Fort Hill's work on Breakthrough Learning. Good whitepapers & info on Fort Hill's website. http://www.forthillcompany.com/

Melissa, you might find what you are looking for in the research on Crew Resources Management, an airplane pilot training model that has been used and perfected for more than 50 years and is recently being translated into healthcare settings.

An article I came across today in Quality and Safety in Healthcare (McCulloch et al. April 2009) describes combining classroom training with on-the-job coaching.

Aviation training tends to be the gold standard for studies that link training to performance improvement, if they are using this approach, it must be evidence based.
