Our company is very family-oriented and very generous when it comes to giving employees paid time off. We are currently discussing when the office should be open/closed over the upcoming Christmas sea

Congratulations to your management! In addition to Christmas, Canada has a statutory holiday Dec. 26 called "Boxing Day". Employees must have the day off with pay or be paid O/T for the hours they work Dec. 26. So most of us will have a four day weekend. It used to be that all businesses closed, but more recently, retailers have chosen to pay the premium and open for post-Christmas sales. Similarly, service sector employees find themselves working extra hours. However, it's quite common for Canadian industrial and non-essential services companies to shut down for the remaining 3 days of the week - some with regular pay, some with scheduled vacation pay. Canadians like their holidays to visit family and will often prefer the extra travel time (or recovery time!) to the money. I have to say that most people aren't particularly interested in being at work that week. Their minds are elsewhere and their bodies might as well be with them. Shut down and reconvene with full productivity in January.

We are a non-profit call center. We are also very family-oriented. We will close on December 21 after our Christmas lunch and reopen on January 2. And trust me, we need that rejuvenation time!! Our president says that she takes care of us so we can take care of our customers.

Hello,
Our company is open the four days after xmas. It is required that there be at least 1 person from each position in the department each of those four days. This is to support our internal and external customers. I hope this helps.
Have a good holiday.

Where I'm currently employed, we're never "closed" (Health System Employee Assistance Program), since we're available 24/7. The majority of staff in my department will be off between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, but I will be in the office.

Other departments are closed those 4 days in between.

I work for a college, and we are closed annually from Christmas through New Years. It's a great tool for both recruiting and retention.

For Thanksgiving, our company is closed on Thanksgiving day and the day after. For Christmas, we are closed on the Friday before Christmas (since Christmas eve falls on Sunday) and Christmas day. We are also provided 3 floating holidays that we can take whenever we choose to do so.

We are a non-profit service. We observe the common holidays. Depending on the type of business, most employers try to observe either the day before or after Christmas. Since Christmas is on a Monday this year, employees having Friday off before will help them prepare for the holiday.

Although our office is closed on Monday, Dec. 25, we still have a paper which comes out on Tuesday. Therefore, we have a skeleton crew.
These employees get a floating holiday.

We're going to close between Christmas and New Years for construction and building maintenance. This is the second year in a row we've done so; however, it is not a policy going forward.

We are a Community Health Center and want to provide health care services to our patients by being available to them. Our six holidays we obseve each year are: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, we observe the Friday before; if on a Sunday, we observe the Monday after. However, employees can submit leave requests for additional days which must be approved by their supervisor. This permits the supervisor to keep phones and departments covered sufficiently with a limited staff. Most of our employees are willing to "go the extra mile" when someone needs time off for family. Since our "business" is contingent on our providers, if there are too many providers wanting time off (as was the day after Thanksgiving), we closed the offices but anyone who wanted to work (in administration) was permitted to do so. We could take paid time off or without pay since the doors were closed.
