Our company is very family-oriented and very generous when it comes to giving employees paid time off. We are currently discussing when the office should be open/closed over the upcoming Christmas sea

I work for a University and it depends on the day that the holiday falls on. This year not only Christmas and New Years will the University be closed, but the day after as well. The employees will receive holiday pay for these two days. We also closed at noon on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving is a holiday as well.

I previously worked for a company that took off on Chrismas Eve, Christmas, New Years Eve, and New Years Day. However, the company also dropped to a skeleton crew for the entire week between Christmas Eve and New Years Day. The staff chose which one day he or she would work based on seniority until all days were covered.

I work in an inbound call center for a large pharmaceutical company. Employees enjoy paid holidays: Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving and Dec 25 Christmas Day and 1 more day either before or after (depending what day holiday falls). As of last year, most employees will also enjoy paid vacation for the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. We require skeleton crews for 'essential' functions (volunteer basis). These volunteers will enjoy their choice of 3 days of vacation in lieu of that week's as long as it is taken before March 31 of the following year.

I think the general message is that if you can do it, it's a great employee satisfaction and retention tool. I work in Automotive manufacturing, where the time between Christmas & New Years is pretty routinely given as paid time off. Most people, once they've had this benefit, are very reluctant to give it up!

I'm in the financial industry and if the NY Stock Exchange is open, we are required to be open. We therefore were off Thanksgiving Day and will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day as well. Many people arrange to take vacation days during the holidays and it works out pretty well for everyone.

Survey your customers, I believe that 40-45% will be open on or the day after Tuesday. Depending on the needs of those customers, schedule a "skelton crew" (junior qualified employees) to meet those needs. The following week - New Year's Day - duplicate the process with other employees.

The answer to your question will probably be based upon whether your company primarily serves the government or private sector. As a government provider, our company closes when they do: in this case from 18 Dec 06 Dec to 2 Jan 07 with pay, of course. Nontheless, I believe it's a great idea to shut down whenever convienient because an investement in your people is far more important than an investment in your infrastructure. People First!

one and a half to two days off with pay seems to be the average, more would be generous. I once worked for a company that closed the entire week and employes were allowed to use vacation pay, but this was a hardship for those with no accrued vacation, especially over the holidays...

We (Advanced Reading Concepts) are a training firm and have always offered our 3 day, 12 hour Speedreading course between the holidays. We actually promote our program by saying "increase your professional productivity during a non-productive week". Many of our students are indeed "off" during that week. For us the week has become a business opportunity.
