I have applied to, and been accepted to Abilene Christian University's online Masters in Science HR program. I am looking into also applying to the University of Illinois's online Masters in Education

"Stepchild" Isn't that an archaic and narrow-minded view given the importance of human capital and talent management?

I am troubled by this, it seems biased and egotistical, but it does explain a lot.

Not at all biased. Merely a statement of fact. I think if you were to review the background of HR VP's, Chief People Officers, whatever you want to call them you'll find that they rarely come from the training and development discipline.

You could have stated that fact without the demeaning label. Maybe it is a different career track, more and more organizations are hiring Chief Learning Officers.

From my experience strong backgrounds in OD and training are paramount to successful achievement of top level HR Executive positions.

I didn't consider "stepchild" to be demeaning. Sorry to offend.

HRPro: True enough about the OD and T&D in the background. But in looking at the coursework for the degree the OP originally put up, it's very T&D and OD specific without any other HR disciplines. Hence my comment about advancing to the top HR management levels; perhaps I should've been more specific that someone with only OD/T&D rarely gets to the top positions.

I want to thank everyone for their insight on the degree programs I posted.

I am finding that most Masters in HR programs are highlighting training and development. Do I need to avoid these programs? I have kind of gotten lost in the posting exchange.

I don't know what other classes I should be looking for in an HR curriculum, since most seem to highlight T&D.

Another school I am looking at is a local one...here is the curriculum for it. Perhaps you will like this one better? My worry with this school, however, is that the school won't be known as well outside of my state...and there's a possibility I will be looking for work outside the state upon graduation.

T&D is the future of HR. While certainly some may still be required for other areas, the specialization involved in T&D is crucial to the successful long term development of an organizations human capital (skills, knowledge, abilities, teams, etc). As an HR executive I can outsource almost anything to external experts for a substantially lower cost than having it in-house. This is especially true with any transactional aspect of HR. What becomes cost prohibitive, while requiring more intimate organizational knowledge, is a companies developmental needs as it relates to their people, future skills and knowledge, etc. I am not speaking of flufff; I am speaking of substance unique top the organization and not some "off the shelf" training topic.

I would not avoid T&D any more than I would avoid recruiting, employee/labor relations, benefits, etc. I would however encourage you to either find a program or construct a program that emphasizes the unique requirements in this area (T&D) while not losing site of the business aspect of HR, e.g. finance, marketing, operations as well as those pesky stereotypical areas of manpower analysis, compliance, etc. .

HRPro nails it quite nicely and succinctly.

Nork, I didn't mean to be so sensitive, I usually visit this web site when I need some collegial support and you hit a raw nerve.

All professions have factions that are less prestigious and pointing that out to someone trying to make a career decision is absolutely the right thing to do. My primary function is in T&D and the attitudes are real and they can get really old. It is best to be prepared.
