I am looking for reliable Compensation Data for the Manufacturing Industry. We are a small private owned company with approximately 500 employees located in Illinois. We try to compare multiple sources for salary  levels before we make an offer or give rasies annually.  We currently use COMPDATA SURVEYS for our information. Occasionally BLR (which we subscribe to) also has the information we are looking for. I would like to find at least one other reliable source of information - not salary.com or similar. Could you please let me know your sources of information?

Thank you

Liz

Your best bet for reliable salary survey information would be one of the compensation consulting firms such as Hay Group, Towers Perrin Forster, Sibson Consulting, Aon  Hewitt or Mercer.  For lower cost surveys, you may find that an industry association might work best.  For example, the American Electronics Association, now called TechAmerica, did salary surveys for its member companies.  You may be able to find a similar trade association in your industry.

Thank you NORK4. I have already looked at some of these and they are beyond our budget unfortunately.

Many times if you participate in the big HR consulting firms surveys, you get a discount on the actual results. It's tough to pay the first year, but after that, it does get better.

Usually whoever is doing the survey needs to have the clout to get the participation and like Nork said, that is usually the trade associations and the big HR consulting firms.

Eva, you get what you pay for. The big firms provide the best data and, in almost all cases, charge the best (for them) prices.

Thank you all for your responses. Unfortunately my boss is not willing to shell out the big bucks. I have presented these options to her however.

I was wondering who in the company puts together the compensation for: employee of the month, top selling deparment award system or car allowance for the employees.
