would anyone like to share their policy for maternity leave? Ex. do you have a separate maternity leave policy with paid benefits that is different from short term disability benefits or do you treat maternity leave like any other disability for paid benefits purposes?

You have to treat maternity disability as you would any other disability under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.

Ours falls under standard FMLA for timeoff (and 30 days for non FMLA eligible employees with the ability to extend) and then a STD payment plan.  The employee must use any PTO before using unpaid timeoff.  But this really applies to any medical leave, not just pregnancy

Some states,such as Tennessee, have their own laws relating to maternity leave. Treat maternity as you would any  disability, but do not run afoul of your state's requirements. Be sure to check them before crafting a policy.

Debra is correct...California is another state that has specific pregnancy-related leave laws.  So definitely check your state(s)!

We do something similar - we offer an option of exercising STD or taking advantage of our tiered maternity leave policy. Depending on tenure, new mom's get anywhere from 6 weeks - 12 weeks of paid time off to welcome a new addition to their household. 

I'm actually working on an initiative to provide all new moms with 12 weeks paid maternity leave regardless of FMLA eligibility.

My employer offers 4-6 weeks of paid STD. I still can't understand why Maternity Leave is considered a "dissability". There should be a mandated policy for Maternity Leave.

It's considered a disability, albeit a temporary one, because pregnancy and recovery from birthing can limit a person's mobility. Laws requiring that pregnancy be treated the same as other disabling conditions are typically called pregnancy disability acts.

There need not be a separate policy for maternity leave.  Existing policies regulating leave for disabling conditions only need to specify that pregnancy disability be treated the same as any other disability (unless in one of the few states which mandate a higher level of benefit for pregnancy).
