We offer $500 to employees who make successful referrals after the referred person has been employed for 6 months. The referring employee cannot be part of the selection process. This is our greatest source of leads. The employee must present the candidate's resume along with a referral tracking form in order for it to count.

We do something similar - $500 upon first day of employment (to employee who referred candidate) and $500 at the one year anniversary of the "new" employee. One caveat - BOTH employees must still be with the company on pay-out dates.

Referrals taken from employees are treated to the interview/screening process just like all others, of course.

We are a small company, software, exempt positions.

I think you can probably set whatever you think will motivate your employees and be within budget constraints. I do think it's important to put the terms of the referral/payment criteria in writing to all. Also, money paid is subject to applicable taxes.

Hope this helps.

I am in the high-tech industry and we payout $2500 the day the referral starts. It has been an extremely succesful program for us.
