We have a few employees whose jobs have changed and they are already more than sufficiently compensated in the new job code/salary range. After communicating a zero raise to one employee, he asked how we expect he will stay motivated without the increase. Again, this employee is already more than fairly compensated for his new position. Any ideas about motivating employees who receive no increase for a year?

Ask the employee whatelse motivates him/her. What was energizing him/her to do the prior position. If you don't hear anything about job content it is time to plan on replacing this person. If money is the only motivator this person is likely to never be happy.

This gets me. An EE will suddenly stop doing what is expected because they did not get a raise? Usually this is a small percentage increase - so does that give the EE the gumption to indicate the rest of the paycheck means nothing?

How about telling them you love what they do for you and know their work will continue to justify the pay they are receiving. If they slack off, perhaps the next EE will be more productive for the money after you make the position available.

I don't know, are you sure he wasn't just joking? On the other hand, the person took a chance and asked for the raise, it might not be such a big deal. i agree with howard7, if he doesn't hate his job, he is fine, if he does, it's time for a change.

Hi Howard,
Even though it's unlikely the OP will see the new responses, I don't think it's a bad thing that people are finding relevant topics among our previous posts. If anything it indicates our Discussion Forum content is (finally) making its way back out onto the Web. Hopefully their posts will draw new participants who will encourage colleagues to check out Workforce's lively and timely forums. As always Howard, thanks for your posts.

Though an old post, the topic certainly caught my eye since our employees have been working with a wage rollback ( and no raises) for several years.   We are now at a point where we can reinstate their 2009 wages, but morale has suffered.  Some of the things we've tried:
1) office parties (holiday or event based)
2) more internal professional development (external training was of course cut)
3) more time off and Friday office closings
4) reducing workload by cutting some programs (we had a RIF too)
5) wellness program

Can't say that it was 100% successful but turnover has only been a few percent above normal. n

Old post or not, the topic is still timely. I too have experienced that but it was the employee role that I had back then. No increase for a year and I thought that it was because I was not doing well with my job, then I thought, then they should have canned be by then. so I went to my manager and he talked to me about the competitiveness of my position and what I'm doing and showed some data on how other's are being paid in that same position. I wasn't doing so bad. then, he asked me on what they can do to make me happy. I wanted to say add more money to my paycheck actually but I didn't. Instead, I worked harder to show that I am worth more than what they are paying me now. a few months later, I got the raise even if I didn't asked for it. I guess it is the talk with the manager and the data he showed that motivated me. if that helps.

Employees that do not receive pay increases or insignificant increases in companies that make record profits, and have no variable pay based on company performance, will always feel cheated.  The reality of today's economy is that raises do NOT meet the increased cost of living, so the employees' disposable income is shrinking even while their company is being successful.  For companies that are not performing well, employees usually understand and are happy to try to turn the company around.    Each individual person and situation is different but the key to having happy productive employees is understanding what motivates them....extra time off, recognition, leadership on projects, flexible schedules all these tools are available to managers to make life better for the employee when $$ are not available.
