I have exempt emps and now and then they come after hours to take care of special situations. Management would like to pay them for these special situations...what is the best way to handle this? A special bonus? A gift card? I'm open to suggestions because I don't think we could call it OT as they are salary exempt. Help please. Thanks in advance.

What we do with our salaried Nurse Practitioners is pay them session bonuses. These are usually tied to working after hour clinics such as flu clinics. For every 2 hrs they work they receive X dollars.

And that would be bad advice. If you want to reward salaried employees, you do not want to tie extra pay to any particular metric and especially not to hours worked. That can easily be used against you in a wage and hour claim arguing against classification as "exempt".

Gift cards are a great idea, but the employer is now required to include the amount of the gift card into the employees earnings. (Uncle Sam has to get his cut!)

Extra payments don't necessarily destroy salaried status. See 29 cfr 541.604. There's a 2005 Wage-Hour Adminstrator Opinion Letter that addresses shift payments to nurse practitioners.

Shift differentials wouldn't hurt, but a direct tie (eg, a quid pro quo) to extra compensation and extra hours worked for salaried employees very well could as in "you get $100 for every 2 hours worked beyond 40 in the pay period".
