I have been assigned to create our company's internship program. can someone assist me with where to begin? my boss mentioned a "timeline" from start to finish but I dont know where to begin and what dates to place by each line.

Also, I have been asked to create a "Salary Matrix" for our interns that don't exist yet. Can anyone help me understand what they may be looking for.

here's a link to wage law on the topic:
http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs71.htm

I would start there to make sure you will be paying them correctly.

Internships vary a lot depending on the industry. And it is going to depend on how deep your employer wants to go and the end goal of the internship. I am not sure you will find a standard template out there.

One thing I have seen though is where over the internship, the intern rotates through a number of departments to get a good idea on what each one does. (Then again I know a few companies that also do this with all new hires).

Thank you kindly. The wages are not the problem, for our grants dept has an agreement with our Govt partners as to how much the interns will get paid which includes housing, stipend, etc.

The timeline for the interns probably has to do with the nature of their intership assignment from start to finish. Lets say you have accounting interns. You would get with the head of accounting and discuss what areas the inten should be assigned to, how long they would be on each assignment piece and what they should learn from each piece.

You then repeat this for each intern/area.

Salary Matrix- A normal Salary Matrix is a three box by three box diagram that has one axis as performance rating and the other axis as position in range and then in each box you have a merit increase band.

For interns that may not be what they want. I would go back and ask them what they visualize as the x and y axis and that will give you an idea of what should go in the boxes.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (http://www.naceweb.org) is a professional association that specializes in helping employer develop college recruiting programs - internships being one of the main programming resources.

There is lots and lots of information on the site, including internship research and benchmarking all the way to a guide on how to create a program. Check them out.

Our state Chamber of Commerce offers a free program and online intern/employer matching service at www.indianaintern.net. Even if you aren't interested in the intern database, there is an Employer Toolkit for starting an internship program.

If you partner with the colleges/universities; they will also assist in helping you craft an internship program as they normally have an office that works with employers to place interns.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
