Looking for suggestions or comments on setting up an employee "self-nominated" award. We have other awards in which managers or peers nominate others, but this would be a self nominating award.

I personally would be loathe to take on the extra employee relations work resulting from this. I have at least several employees who are convinced that they're stars (they're not), who would be nominating themselves over and over and over at every opportunity, and to whom I'd have to spend hours and hours and hours explaining to them why they're not getting the awards they nominated themselves for. And I know at least one of these self-styled "stars" would respond by running to the CEO to complain about me, and while the CEO would probably end up on my side in all this, it wouldn't be 'til after I had to settle a huge flap and kerfuffle in the executive suite.

I also know of at least several very high performing individuals who happen to be very humble and self-effacing and who would never dream of nominating themselves for an award. I'd feel very bad about them, especially because I'd be too busy calming the not-stars described above to spend any time encouraging the humble ones to nominate themselves.

Completely agree with HRbth on this one. Very little gain for a whole lot of pain.

After all what is self praise worth, really......?

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
