Ours is a small investment company of 25 and we just appointed a Compensation Committee to review the compensation of our CEO and other senior executives. What we need is an effective compensation survery or report that would cover the securities industry and senior positions. I know one has to pay for these sorts of reports. Any recommendations or suggestions?

Agree with that one or Mercer, Hewitt, etc. Mercer's Exec group used to be based out of their Seattle office, but I am not sure it still is. I actually worked with quite a few of them years ago when I was working on plans for our Houston clients.

To get good comparisons, you need a company that is well known enough to get a wide range of responses to make the data usable. And that usually is going to be one of the big ones!

Check with your local Chamber of Commerce on recommendations as well. While it's easy to find Towers, Mercer, etc., the biggest isn't always the best, especially when you factor in that your company is small. Most of the national surveys they generate are a great resource for large and even mid-size firms, but once you get into the small market arena, it's a whole different story.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
